So, uh, yeah. It's been a while. Apologies for that, but it's been kinda busy here, what with the moving, orientation and registration for class.

As of this morning, I'm officially a student of theology. Well, actually, my class this morning was "Church History," from 100AD to 1250AD (when Aquinas died, I think). Looks like it'll be a lot of fun -- I get to read Chrysostom, Augustine, Athanasius, Origen, and all of those brilliant dead folks from early Christendom. Maybe I'll even post my musings on Augustine here, because I'm sure you're all dying to hear them. :) My professor seems really cool too - he's got a Phd from Notre Dame, which is good, but he never had a chance to study with John Yoder. I suppose I can look past that.

Seminary culture has been kinda strange so far. People are extraordinarily kind, which is helpful, but there is also an underlying provinciality and conservatism that makes me a bit uneasy. The provinciality is offset by the diversity of the place -- in the incoming fall class, there are students from 12 different coutries.

I shouldn't judge to harshly yet though, because I haven't really had sufficient time to sound this place out.

One interesting anecdote: One of my fellow students came up to me before class and noticed the Kerry/Edwards button on my backpack. She remarked "Oh, you're for Kerry," as if it was assumed that since I was at seminary, I would be for Bush. I spent the next 15 minutes or so articulating my reasons for voting for Kerry, which was more difficult than I thought, because, well, it should be obvious, shouldn't it? Sometimes the most apparent truths are the ones that are the hardest to explain.

Anyways, hopefully I'll be more regular in my updating over the coming weeks.

Brian you should definately keep a journal for your year there - you could turn into into something later.
